Rust Nation '24Rust, Serverless, and AWS - Writing Lambdas in Rust

Event Details

Rust Nation is the first UK conference dedicated to the Rust language. It will be held in the heart of London on the 26th, 27th and 28th of March 2024. On March 28th, Luciano Mammino returns to Rust Nation to deliver his talk ‘Rust, Serverless, and AWS – Writing Lambdas in Rust’.

As Rust continues to revolutionize the software engineering landscape, questions arise about its compatibility with serverless computing. Particularly in AWS, where it is not yet a natively supported runtime, the prospect may seem daunting. However, Luciano argues that not only should we attempt to leverage Rust within serverless environments, but it’s also surprisingly straightforward to do so!

In this enlightening session, Luciano will cover a wide array of topics including:

  • Understanding the essence of Serverless computing and its benefits
  • Exploring AWS Lambda: use cases, limitations, pricing model, CPU allocation, and execution model
  • Unveiling the advantages of using Rust with Lambda functions
  • Leveraging Cargo-Lambda and integrating it with SAM for Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Hands-on experience: Writing, testing, and deploying our first Lambda function in Rust
  • Delving deep into the Lambda interface and fine-tuning request and response types to suit our requirements

By the conclusion of this talk, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to embark on their journey of writing and deploying Lambdas in Rust, paving the way for innovative serverless solutions.
