The AWS User Group Netherlands recently hosted their 6th AWS Community Day at Kinepolis Leidschendam. A highlight was the featured talk, “Building Secure and Efficient SaaS Platforms on AWS Serverless” by Luciano Mammino and Guilherme Dalla Rosa. They explored multi-tenant architectures on AWS, covering security, tenant isolation, and performance. The talk also demonstrated using Cognito for authentication, DynamoDB for tenant data, and Lambda for compute, with insights from the AWS Well-Architected SaaS Lens.

At AWS Community Day Italy on September 27th in Rome, Luciano Mammino presented his talk, “Managing AWS Accounts like a PRO.” The session explored the benefits of using multiple AWS accounts to enhance security, reliability, and cost optimization. Luciano demonstrated how services like AWS IAM Identity Center and AWS Organizations, along with tools like Granted and OrgFormation, help manage accounts consistently, scaling from small teams to large organizations.

AWS Community Day DACH is a conference focused on the latest innovations in AWS technology. Attendees participated in workshops and hands-on labs covering topics from serverless architectures to AI-driven analytics, gaining practical skills to optimize their workflows. The AWS BelfAWSt User Group organizers recently hosted their first AWS Community Day Belfast. A highlight of the day was the featured talk, “Faster/Greener/Cheaper Serverless Compute with Lambda & Rust” by Luciano Mammino. Rust is making waves in software engineering, but how does it fit into serverless computing, especially when AWS doesn’t officially support it as a runtime? Luciano revealed how easy it is to get started with Rust in Lambda, and why the benefits—speed, efficiency, and sustainability—make it well worth the effort.

Conor Maher spoke at The Developers Conference in Cluj, Romania. In his presentation, titled “Turning Your Servers Inside Out: From Pets to Cattle,” Conor addressed the challenges of transitioning from traditional, server-dependent platforms to modern serverless architectures. He demonstrated practical strategies for deconstructing legacy systems, allowing teams to leverage the operational benefits of serverless while preserving essential elements of their existing infrastructure. By the end of the talk, attendees gained actionable insights on preparing their legacy environments for future AI and ML workloads.

At ServerlessDays Belfast Luciano Mammino and Guilherme Dalla Rosa presented their talk ‘Building Secure and Efficient SaaS Platforms on AWS Serverless’ – a journey through the world of multi-tenant architectures on AWS using serverless technologies. This talk covered key aspects of multi-tenancy, including security, tenant isolation, and performance, explored different deployment models and their tradeoffs, and covered how to implement policy-based isolation with IAM.

The AWS Community Day Nordics featured speakers with real-life AWS experience, including Luciano Mammino, who in his talk – ‘Your Lambdas, In Rust!’ explored the impact of Rust on serverless computing, revealing that despite not being a natively supported runtime in AWS, it’s both feasible and easy to get started with.

The April AWS User Group Cork meetup was focused on exploring real-world use cases of AWS Generative AI. Eoin Shanaghy gave a talk titled “Safely hacking into production databases” where he discussed Amazon Aurora, a relational database service, as well as the challenges of achieving high availability, rapid recovery, security, and developer friendliness without blowing your budget.

At Rust Nation, Luciano Mammino delivered his talk; ‘Rust, Serverless, and AWS – Writing Lambdas in Rust’. As Rust continues to revolutionize the software engineering landscape, questions arise about its compatibility with serverless computing. Particularly in AWS, where it is not yet a natively supported runtime, the prospect may seem daunting – but Luciano is here to help.

This workshop on SERVERLESS RUST and AWS LAMBDA explored the convergence of Lambda’s flexibility and Rust’s performance. Discover why Rust stands out as the ideal choice for dominating this innovative and dynamic environment. Throughout the session, participants will embark on a journey from writing their first Lambda function, “Hello World,” using Rust to learning how to test it locally and deploy it into production.

During this session, Roberto Gambuzzi (@gbinside) and Luciano Mammino (@loige) delivered a pragmatic introduction to nom, a renowned Rust parser combinator crate. Essentially, nom serves as a tool that facilitates the creation of parsers, even for more intricate use cases. Attendees gained insights into common suboptimal parsing methods such as string splitting and regex usage as well as fundamental concepts of nom and frequently utilized functions.

Luciano Mammino returned to Codemotion Milan on October 24th to present his talk ‘Your Lambdas in Rust’. Rust is taking the software engineering world by storm, but how does it affect serverless? In AWS it’s not even a supported runtime, so how can we even use it… and should we even try to do that? Spoiler: yes we should and it’s actually quite easy to get started with it!

Luciano Mammino returned to the international Node.js Conference in Brescia in 2023 to present his talk ‘Did you know JavaScript has iterators?’. In this workshop, Luciano shared different ways to do iteration with JavaScript and Node.js, iteration protocols to standardise synchronous and asynchronous iteration, as well as common use cases for these protocols, great tools for iteration and finally hot tips, common pitfalls, and some (more or less successful) wild ideas!

Grown out of the AWS User Group Manchester, AWS Community Summit (AWS ComSum) runs virtual and physical events for the AWS Community. Luciano Mammino attended AWS ComSum on September 28th 2023, to deliver his talk ‘Everything I know about S3 pre-signed URLs’,- offering valuable insights on handling file uploads and downloads in web applications.

At the AWS AI & Data Conference, CTO Eoin Shanaghy conducted an exclusive one-on-one interview with Werner Vogels, Amazon’s Chief Technology Officer. This session offered invaluable insights into the future of AI, data, and cloud technologies. Later, Mark Hodnett delivered an engaging talk on developing a modern data strategy using a custom-built serverless-first development platform on AWS.

Following on from ServerlessDays Belfast, this At Night series was set up  to support and connect the local Serverless community and keep the energy going. Luciano Mammino and Guilherme Dalla Rossa joined a session to discuss the topic of observability for serverless applications, before presenting ‘SLIC Watch’, an open-source toolkit which automates away most of the pain of setting up dashboards and alarms in CloudWatch – making it easier to achieve greater levels of observability.

On September first, Luciano Mammino and Diren Akkoc both joined the speaker lineup at ShipItCon 2023 at the Mansion House in Dublin. Diren joined a panel discussion to discuss topics such as the unknown, risk management, security, and building resilient teams and processes. While Luciano’s talk, titled “Automating observability on AWS with SLIC Watch,” addressed the issue of unnoticed failures in Lambda functions.

An exclusive industry briefing hosted by Financial Times, AWS, and Intel focused on harnessing the power of high-performance and quantum computing and exploring the most effective ways to leverage AI/ML, HPC, and quantum for corporations, governments, and society as a whole. Peter Elger and Colum Thorne joined the schedule of expert speakers to present a case study on Serverless high-performance financial modelling, which was featured on the AWS HPC blog.

For the first session of “dotCom,” the exciting new series from ninedots recruitment, Cloud Software Developer Apprentice, Diren Akkoc, explored observability in the cloud and introduced fourTheorem’s open-source toolkit for observability, SLIC watch.

JSDay 2023 is the 12th edition of the Italian JavaScript conference, organised by GrUSP of phpday, reactjsday and many others. Joining the lineup, Luciano Mammino presented his talk ‘Production-ready lambdas with Node.js’, including tips on building production-grade lambdas using AWS: testing, logging, metrics, tracing, infrastructure as code, code-reuse, frameworks and more.

AWS Cloud Day Dublin is dedicated to sharing customer insights, stories, and best practices related to the AWS cloud, innovation, and sustainability. fourTheorem participated in the event, joining AWS Senior Developer Advocate Matheus Guimaraes and Colum Thorne on the Tech Track for a joint talk titled ‘A Modern Application is ASAP’.

Rust Nation is the first UK conference dedicated to the Rust language, joining together hundreds of Rust developers for two exciting days of Rust talks, training and workshops. Senior Architect, Luciano Mammino will be speaking at Rust Nation ’23 – his first-ever Rust conference! Luciano has been learning Rust on the side for the last few years, building small side projects. This talk covers his experience of solving the Advent of Code challenges.

The AWS Financial Services Forum convened representatives from financial services organizations to explore the latest trends in Financial Risk Management and Modeling in the cloud. During the Partner/Customer hour, fourTheorem CTO Eoin Shanaghy and Colum Thorne presented their talk, “Accelerated Risk Modeling on AWS with Serverless.” This session was followed by an AWS Fireside Chat featuring Serverless Specialist Matt Meckes.

Representing fourTheorem, Consultant Senior Engineer Guilherme Dalla Rossa hosted a Lightening Talk; ‘Observing all the Serverless Things’ at the AWS Developer Lounge. Guil shared his best practices for the powerful but complex CloudWatch, and gave a demonstration on how to use our open-source toolkit for observability – SLIC Watch.

NodeConf EU has rightly earned its reputation as the leading key Node.js event in Europe with the highest quality talks, the most relevant workshops, and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for people to meet and share ideas. And this year, Senior Architect Luciano Mammino hosted his Workshop ‘JavaScript iteration protocols’, where he showed attendees how to build iterators and iterable objects, both synchronous and asynchronous.

The AWS Community Summit, also known as AWS ComSum, aims to provide opportunities and a platform for the AWS community to meet, share experiences, and spread their knowledge and best practices. This year AWS ComSum returned to Manchester, where Senior Cloud Architect Michael Twomey hosted a talk on exploring Boto3 behaviours using Mitmproxy. While Senior Architect Luciano Mammino virtually presented a case study on Serverless for HPC.

The AWS Data Driven Innovation event was a great opportunity to connect with the AWS AI & ML , Analytics and Data platform technology community and practitioners, and learn about how AWS customers are delivering new and differentiated capabilities. Mark Hodnett, Cloud Architect/ Data Scientist at fourTheorem, hosted a breakout session on ‘Insights from Terabytes – How to choose the right tools’.

CTO Eoin Shanaghy gave a talk covering the highs and lows of building Node.js apps with Serverless. The open source, JavaScript-based SLIC Starter project was presented, showing how it is used to quickly adopt best practices and get to a successful production deployment without the pain.

CEO Peter Elger spoke on how to leverage AI services with Javascript. Most people associate AI and Machine Learning with the Python language. This talk explored how to get started building AI enabled platforms and services using full stack Javascript & Serverless technologies.

CEO Peter Elger spoke at Predict, one of Europes leading data science and machine learning conferences, about the fast track to AI with Serverless. The talks covered examples from Peter and Eoin’s book ‘AI as a service’ as well as some real world projects.

At the Warsaw AWS & Serverless User Group meetup in Poland, CTO Eoin Shanaghy presented a hands on workshop on the open-source project, the SLIC Serverless Starter Kit.  SLIC Starter is a complete starter project for production-grade Serverless applications on AWS.

At the Dublin Microservices meetup, a forum for all things related to microservice oriented systems, CTO Eoin Shanaghy introduced the Serverless SLIC starter kit which enables the rapid delivery of microservice based systems on AWS.

The Microservices & Serverless Conference in Berlin is an international community conference on Microservices, Serverless & Cloud Native. CTO Eoin Shanaghy spoke on the topic of “Why FaaS is the Least Important Part of Serverless”.
